The defining Mongolian instrument — two strings (traditionally horsehair, now often nylon), a trapezoidal soundbox, and a horse-head carved into the scroll. UNESCO added morin-khuur music to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2008 (submitted jointly by Mongolia and China for Inner Mongolia).
