Yinchuan was the capital of the Western Xia (西夏) empire from 1038 until Genghis Khan destroyed the dynasty in 1227. Nine royal tombs still stand west of the modern city — pyramid-like earthen mounds sometimes called the 'Chinese Pyramids' (东方金字塔).
culture
As capital of China's only Hui autonomous region, Yinchuan has a distinctive Muslim-influenced atmosphere: mosques, halal cuisine, and wheat-based dishes. It's also the gateway to the Helan Mountains and China's top wine region.
