金三角 refers to the mountainous tri-border of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, long infamous as an opium/heroin source under warlords like Khun Sa. In modern Chinese media it is also shorthand for any 'unregulated borderland' and more recently for the Myanmar-side scam-compound zone that has ensnared Chinese trafficking victims.
