usage

Used for breaking up an organized group — a workforce, an army, a household staff — by sending them home, often with compensation. The collocation 遣散费 (qiǎnsànfèi) = severance pay. More formal/written than 解雇 (jiěgù, "fire") and applies to whole groups rather than individuals.
