Tips

culture
Originated in Shanghai. In a pre-cafe, pre-mall era when young couples had nowhere private to date, they'd just walk the streets endlessly together - supposedly 'rolling' () the road flat. The term spread from Shanghainese into national Mandarin and still carries that wholesome, slightly old-fashioned dating vibe.
register
Colloquial and a bit dated. here is read yà, not zhá or gá. In modern usage 逛街 (to stroll/shop) is more neutral; 轧马路 specifically evokes courtship walking.
