Both characters are old:
赏 means 'to reward' and
赐 means 'to bestow (from above)'. Together they're a hendiadys for the imperial act of granting gold, titles, land, or even a name to someone in service. In dynastic records,
赏赐 entries are a primary way historians track who was in favor at court.
