One of five 自治区 (autonomous regions) in China, alongside 内蒙古 (Inner Mongolia), 新疆 (Xinjiang), 广西 (Guangxi), and 宁夏 (Ningxia). Established 1965. The short form is just 藏 (Zàng), visible on Tibetan license plates.
mistakes
In 西藏 the character 藏 is pronounced zàng (fourth tone), not cáng (to hide). 藏族 (Zàngzú) = Tibetan ethnicity; 藏 cáng only means "hide" elsewhere.
