Tips

history
The Han envoy 张骞 opened the routes west in the 2nd century BC, and in 60 BC the Han set up the 西域都护府 (Protectorate of the Western Regions) to oversee the oasis kingdoms of the Tarim Basin. In the narrow sense the term means the lands east of the Pamirs, today's Xinjiang; in the wide sense it reached as far as Persia and India.
culture
In wuxia novels and period dramas 西域 is the exotic far west, a land of strange martial arts and poisons. Jin Yong's villain 欧阳锋, the 'Western Venom', comes from there.
