culture
Li Bai wrote the three poems around 744, after leaving the court in Chang'an. The first moves from despair to defiance and ends 长风破浪会有时,直挂云帆济沧海。 'A day will come to ride the long wind and break the waves; then I will hoist my cloud-high sail and cross the vast sea.'
history
The title began as a folk song taken into the yuefu, songs about the hardships of travel and of life. 鲍照's series 拟行路难 'Imitating Hard Is the Road' made it a classic theme, and many later poets, among them 顾况, wrote poems under it.
