One of the eight great bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. The name (Sanskrit Ākāśagarbha) literally means 'Space Womb / Space Treasury' — limitless wisdom and merit as vast as empty space. In Japanese Buddhism known as Kokūzō Bosatsu (虚空蔵菩薩), the patron of Shingon master Kūkai.
