莫霍克

莫霍克 transliterates "Mohawk" — one of the six nations of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy in what is today upstate New York and southern Quebec. The English word covers (1) the people, (2) the Mohawk River, and (3) the punk-era hairstyle named after the Mohawk warrior shaved-side haircut, popularized in films like 《出租车司机》 (Taxi Driver, 1976).

莫 (mò, "do not") + 霍 (huò, "suddenly") + 克 (kè, "to overcome") chosen purely for sound. The same 克 character closes countless transliterations of "-k" finals: 坦克 (tank), 扑克 (poker), 乔布斯 (Jobs has 斯 instead, but compare 麦当劳 McDonald's-era patterns).
