Built AD 70-80 under emperors Vespasian and Titus; known in Latin as the Flavian Amphitheatre. Held roughly 50,000-80,000 spectators for gladiator combat, mock sea battles, and wild-animal hunts — hence the Chinese name 斗兽场 ('beast-fighting arena').
