Two readings exist: zhānlián (general 'sticking together' — the modern standard) and the older nián lián (still listed in CC-CEDICT). For everyday and medical usage, prefer zhān. The medical sense — abnormal scar-tissue adhesions after inflammation or surgery — is the most common professional use.
