簧 originally meant the bamboo reed inside the ancient Chinese
笙 (shēng) mouth-organ;
片 ('thin slice') extends it to any thin reed plate. Today
簧片 covers Western reeds for clarinet, oboe, sax, harmonica, accordion — anything that vibrates against an opening to make a tone.
