Established 1953. Capital is 合作市 (Hézuò Shì). Home to 拉卜楞寺 (Lābǔléng Sì, Labrang Monastery), one of the six great monasteries of the 格鲁派 (Gélǔpài, Gelug school) of Tibetan Buddhism, founded 1709. Most of the population are 安多 (Ānduō, Amdo) Tibetans.
