Cats famously avoid hot liquids - their tongues are sensitive to heat. The Chinese expression 猫舌头 ('cat tongue') is the same image and predates the identical Japanese loan 猫舌 (nekojita).

Useful at the hotpot table, where most diners pull dumplings out of boiling broth and eat them immediately. Saying 我是猫舌头 lets you off the hook for being slow without losing face.
