history
Beyond 'piglet', 猪仔 is the historical term for the late-Qing 'coolie trade' (猪仔贸易): Chinese men kidnapped or deceived into contract labor in Cuba, Peru, the U.S., Southeast Asia. The 'piglet' name comes from how they were herded onto 'pig pens' (猪仔) and packed into ship holds. In Hong Kong politics, 猪仔议员 ('piglet legislator') has also been used as a slur for a politician who sells out their bloc.
