爪哇 (Zhǎowā) is the historical Chinese name for the Indonesian island of Java, used since the Tang/Song dynasties when Chinese traders called the island Shepo (
闍婆) and later
爪哇. It is the home of Borobudur and the political/economic heart of Indonesia. Note
爪 here reads zhǎo, not zhuǎ — the literary reading.
