usage
熄灭 can be literal (fire/lights going out) or figurative (hope/passion fading). For car engines, use 熄火 (xīhuǒ) instead.
memory
熄 has the fire radical 火 + 息 (rest/cease) — fire that has come to rest. 灭 also means to extinguish. Double emphasis on putting out fire.
