The English word 'gaslighting' (psychologically manipulating someone into doubting reality) comes from the 1944 film Gaslight, where a husband secretly dims gas lamps and denies it. In Chinese the act is now also called
煤气灯效应 (méiqìdēng xiàoyìng, 'gaslight effect').
