炮台 evokes coastal defense forts of the late Qing — most famously
虎门炮台 (Humen Forts) at the mouth of the Pearl River, where Lin Zexu staged the destruction of British opium and where the First Opium War (1839-1842) opened. Many were built in the Ming-Qing era to fend off pirates and Western navies.
