重炮 originally refers to large-caliber artillery (howitzers, cannons, anti-aircraft guns). In sports commentary it carries over to mean a 'heavy hitter' — a player whose shots or punches pack devastating power, e.g.
重炮手 (a heavy-shot player) in football, basketball, or boxing.
