Tips

history
陶谷 (903–970) served the Five Dynasties courts and then the early Song. His book collects unusual names for everyday things, sorted under headings such as plants, food, wine, clothing and funerals. One entry says the people of a county called tofu 小宰羊 'little mutton', the first clear written mention of 豆腐.
culture
The idiom 纸醉金迷 'drunk on paper, dazzled by gold', for a life of luxury and excess, comes from its story of a small room so full of gilded objects and gleaming paper that visitors felt dazed. So does the saying that news passes from one person to ten and from ten to a hundred.
