From Yuan Hong's 《三国名臣序赞》 (Jin dynasty): 方寸海纳 - the heart (literally 'square-inch') takes in like the sea. Commentator Li Zhouhan (Tang) glossed it: 方寸之心，如海之纳百川也 - 'the heart is like the sea that accepts a hundred rivers.' Often paired with 有容乃大 ('with tolerance comes greatness') as a couplet.

A favorite motto for schools, cities, and institutions marketing openness. Xiamen University uses it as part of its campus ethos; the character 海 is central to its self-image.
