Tips

history
From 杜甫》(Du Fu, Tang, 745 CE), written at Lixia Pavilion during a banquet with the older poet and official (Li Yong) in Jinan: 济南 (East vassal moors the black-canopied carriage; north islet surmounts the clear river. East of the sea, this pavilion is ancient; Jinan has many famous men). The couplet is inscribed in red on the gate of Jinan's Daming Lake () and has become the city's official self-description.
usage
Almost always quoted as the couplet with . = 'right of the sea,' the classical name for the Shandong region. = scholars/men of renown, not modern 'celebrities.'
