The name means "between the rivers". Under the Han it was the princedom of Hejian, whose Prince Xian was known for collecting old pre-Qin books, and later the seat of
河间府. The Qing scholar
纪晓岚 came from the prefecture, so old writers sometimes call him simply
河间.
