The Baotou-Lanzhou railway (包兰铁路) crosses the dunes here. Since the 1950s it has been kept clear of sand by grids of straw pressed into the dunes, 麦草方格, a method later used across China's deserts.

Visitors cross the Yellow River here on rafts made of inflated sheepskins, 羊皮筏子.
