history
Tang dynasty poet 柳宗元 (773–819) was exiled to Yongzhou for ten years after a failed reform. There he wrote 《永州八记》 (Eight Records of Yongzhou) and 《捕蛇者说》 (Snake Catcher's Tale), now classics of Chinese prose that every high school student reads.
