Tips

history
Her name was 王嫱, and 昭君 was her courtesy name. In 33 BC 汉元帝 gave her in marriage to the chanyu 呼韩邪. Under the Jin she was renamed 明妃 to avoid the name of 司马昭, and her tomb, the 青冢, is near Hohhot.
culture
Her journey north is a favourite subject of poems, operas and paintings, and among the four beauties she is the one who 'makes the wild geese fall' (落雁). A legend says the court painter 毛延寿 made her portrait plain because she would not bribe him, so the emperor saw her beauty only as she was leaving.
