张若虚 wrote it around 700 on an old yuefu title from the southern Chen court. Its 36 lines move from the tide and the rising moon,
春江潮水连海平,
海上明月共潮生, to the question of who first saw the moon, and to wives and husbands apart under it. It is often praised as
孤篇压全唐, 'one poem that outweighs the whole Tang'. The music of the same name was arranged in 1925 from an older pipa solo.
