Shanghai Xintiandi opened in 2001 as a pioneering adaptive-reuse project: architect Benjamin Wood preserved the stone-gate (石库门) facades of a 1920s lilong neighborhood while gutting the interiors for boutiques, cafes, and bars. The site also contains the meeting hall where the Chinese Communist Party was founded in 1921.
