Tips

culture
Shanghai Xintiandi opened in 2001 as a pioneering adaptive-reuse project: architect Benjamin Wood preserved the stone-gate ( shíkùmén) facades of a 1920s lilong neighborhood while gutting the interiors for boutiques, cafes, and bars. The site also contains the meeting hall where the Chinese Communist Party was founded in 1921.
usage
As a common noun, 新天地 means 'a new world / new frontier' — used metaphorically for entering a new field, hobby, or life stage: 开辟新天地 (open up new horizons).
