Tips

culture
Years in the traditional calendar pair one of ten Heavenly Stems with one of twelve Earthly Branches. 戊 is the fifth stem and 戌 the eleventh branch, the Dog, so every 戊戌 year is a Year of the Dog: 1898, 1958, 2018 and next 2078.
history
Most often the word recalls 1898 and the 戊戌变法, the Hundred Days' Reform, when the Guangxu Emperor backed 康有为 and 梁启超 in trying to modernize the Qing state. After 103 days Empress Dowager Cixi ended it in a coup, and six reformers were executed.
