Tips

history
In 汤显祖's play of 1598, sixteen-year-old 杜丽娘 takes her first walk in the family garden in spring, falls asleep and dreams of a young scholar, 柳梦梅, who woos her among the peonies. She wakes, pines for him and dies, and is later brought back to life. In the original text the walk and the dream make up one scene; Kunqu performers split it into 游园 and 惊梦.
register
As a verb 惊梦 is literary, found in poems and old fiction. Everyday Chinese says 从梦中惊醒.
