恒山 in Shanxi, the northern peak, and 衡山 in Hunan, the southern one, sound exactly alike. Tell them apart by the character: 恒 'constant' in the north, 衡 'balance' in the south.

Called 北岳 for short. Until 1660 the state sacrifices to the Northern Peak were made at Quyang in Hebei; the Qing then moved them to this mountain at Hunyuan in Shanxi, which has held the title since.
