Bottom heart radical - a pictograph of the four-chambered heart drawn as a shallow bowl with droplets. Indexes 态 in the inner-feeling family alongside 思 to think, 想 to want, 感 to feel. Carries the meaning: 态 names the inward stance - attitude, manner, the shape one's heart takes toward the world.

Top 太 supplies the sound directly - tài to tài, identical. The simplified 态 replaces the traditional 態 phonetic 能 with this much simpler 太, picked purely as a sound match. 太 itself is 大 with a dot, an intensifier glyph, but the great-much imagery doesn't carry over to state, manner.
