At the 1959 庐山会议, 彭德怀 wrote Mao a private letter pointing out the famine caused by the 大跃进 (Great Leap Forward). Mao turned it against him; 彭德怀 was stripped of power and later died of mistreatment during the Cultural Revolution. Rehabilitated posthumously in 1978.
