Two readings, and they are not interchangeable. This one, dāngtiān, points back at a day the conversation has already named: the fire was on Sunday, and 当天 means on that Sunday. Read dàngtiān it means within the same day, with no waiting.
usage
The same 当 heads a small family of time words that all point back at a moment already mentioned: 当时 at that time, 当年 in those years, 当场 on the spot.
