平顶山 ('flat-topped mountain') is a resource-based city built around one of China's largest coalfields, developed from the 1950s onward. Sights outside the urban core include
中原大佛 — at 208 m, one of the tallest statues in the world — and
尧山 scenic area. The city is also sometimes written
鹰城 ('Eagle City') after a local totem.
