Standard Chinese Bible (
和合本) transliteration of the Greek 'Hērōdēs':
希 xī ('He-') +
律 lǜ ('-rod', via the Cantonese-influenced reading 'leot'). Several Herods appear in the New Testament — Herod the Great (Christmas story), Herod Antipas (John the Baptist's execution), Herod Agrippa (Acts) — all use
希律 with a clarifying name appended.
