Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) is one of the most-translated Western authors in modern China. His massive cycle 《人间喜剧》 (La Comédie humaine, "The Human Comedy") - about 90 novels and stories - anchored the introduction of European realism into Chinese letters in the early 20th century. 《高老头》 (Père Goriot) and 《欧也妮·葛朗台》 (Eugénie Grandet) are the two titles every Chinese high-schooler encounters.

Four characters: 巴 (bā, "Ba-") + 尔 (ěr, "-l-") + 扎 (zhā, "-za-") + 克 (kè, "-c"). 尔 is the standard transliteration character for the English/French "l" or "r" between syllables (compare 比尔 Bill, 尼尔 Neil).
