Caused by the ciliate parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis (literally 'small gourd worm' because the protozoan's swollen feeding stage resembles a tiny melon). Raising tank temperature to about 30°C accelerates the parasite's life cycle and is the classic treatment, combined with salt or formalin.
