Xuānwǔ hé Chóngwén liǎng ge qū hòulái fēnbié bìngrù le Xīchéng hé Dōngchéng.
The two districts of Xuanwu and Chongwen were later merged into Xicheng and Dongcheng.
Tips
usage
The district was named after the city gate 宣武门, 'proclaim martial might', which faced 崇文门, 'revere letters', across the south wall: letters to the east, arms to the west.
mistakes
Not 玄武, the Black Tortoise of the north, as in 玄武门之变 (the Xuanwu Gate Incident of 626) and Nanjing's 玄武湖.
