Established 1958, Ningxia is one of China's five 自治区 (autonomous regions) and was created for the Hui (回族) Muslim minority. Though small, its Helan Mountain (贺兰山) foothills have become China's top wine region, with Cabernet Sauvignon producers winning international awards.

history

The region was the heartland of the Western Xia dynasty (西夏, 1038-1227), a Tangut empire destroyed by Genghis Khan. Their mysterious script and royal tombs near Yinchuan are still being studied.
