In the legend, her husband Fan Qiliang (范喜良) was conscripted to build the Great Wall during the Qin dynasty 秦朝 and died there. She traveled north to find him, and her tears were so bitter they collapsed a section of the Wall, revealing his bones. The tale is one of China's Four Great Folktales (四大民间传说), alongside Liang Shanbo & Zhu Yingtai 梁山伯与祝英台, the White Snake 白蛇传, and the Cowherd & Weaver Girl 牛郎织女.
