Chinese five-tier nobility (
五等爵), in descending order:
公 (gōng, duke),
侯 (hóu, marquis),
伯 (bó, count/earl),
子 (zǐ, viscount),
男 (nán, baron). The mapping to European titles became standard in late-Qing translations of European history and is now used in subtitles for British/French peerages.
