history
The name means 'oral transmission'. The school goes back to the 11th-century translator 玛尔巴 and his disciple, the poet-hermit 米拉日巴. Its Karma branch started the practice of recognizing reincarnated lamas (活佛转世) with the Karmapas in the 13th century, a model the other schools later took up.
