The 1961 musical film 《刘三姐》 made 唱山歌 iconic beyond the south: its opening line 'Tāngwāng liú a liú xià lái... 唱山歌,这边唱来那边和' is one of the most recognizable melodies in modern Chinese culture. Still a staple of village festivals across Guangxi and Yunnan.
