Novelist 吴强 (1910–1990) based his 1957 classic 《红日》 (Hóngrì, "Red Sun") on his own experience as a political commissar in the PLA's New Fourth Army. The novel dramatizes the 1947 Battle of Menglianggu and remains one of the canonical "red classics" (红色经典) of PRC literature.
