Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County (
北川羌族自治县) in Sichuan was the area hardest hit by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (
汶川大地震), which killed over 20,000 people in the county alone. The old town was buried by landslides and preserved as a memorial; a completely new Beichuan was rebuilt on a safer site about 20 km away.
